WEALTH

Our view of wealth is so different from God’s. Proverbs has a lot to say about God’s wisdom regarding wealth and treasures. This week, we will dive into the kind of wealth that is richness in God’s economy. True wealth is limitless grace, steadfast love, a relationship with God, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, salvation, and the hope of eternity (to name a few). God cares for every creature, for he made them out of his pure love and desire for their existence. God desires for each person to flourish—but so often our world connects “flourishing” to a sort of material or financial flourishing. However, in God’s economy, true riches, wealth and treasures are founded in the attributes of God (loving, gracious, just, wise, etc). Jesus teaches about this in a practical and clear example about the immaterial treasures that are of heaven. It is easy to fall into our society’s idea of what makes us “rich,” which is sometimes followed by the inaccurate, modern saying “God only helps those who help themselves.” To say that God only helps those who are self-advancing, worthy, or able is not true because God’s perfect love and saving grace are available to everyone, everywhere. May God reshape and adjust our expectation and hope for wisdom in pursuing the treasures of heaven.
