Spirit

The work of the Holy Spirit keeps us connected to the scriptures, to our community, and to God. As we talk about the Spirit, we seem to talk in the abstract — yet in scripture, we see concrete examples of the Spirit. At the very beginning of Genesis 1, the Spirit of God hovering above the water, to Genesis 2 — the breath of life. We move to examples of The Spirit coming upon certain judges, warriors, and prophets in a way that gave them extraordinary power: for example, Joshua (Numbers 27:18); Othniel (Judges 3:10); Gideon (Judges 6:34); Samson (Judges 13:25, 14:6); and Saul (1 Samuel 10:9, 10). We see many different reflections of Spirit in the New Testament — where we see both abstract talk of Spirit and some concrete examples — John 16 — speaking of what the Spirit can be in our lives to Acts 2 — Pentecost — the gift of the Holy Spirit across the tribes.
