Competition and Confrontation: God vs. Pharoah

More than once the Bible demonstrates stories of people or pagan god’s trying to compete with the power of the Lord. Consider how God feels every time someone asks God to “prove yourself”. In the famous stories of the plagues in Egypt, God’s messengers (Moses and Aaron) warn Pharaoh that plagues will come upon his people and land, if he does not let the oppressed Israelites go. While at first, some of Pharaohs sorcerers and magicians attempt to keep up with this powerful God Moses and Aaron speak of…ultimately, they cannot.
It is important to notice the posture of Pharoah’s heart throughout these chapters. It is hardened against God and God’s people (the Israelites). It is difficult to have empathy or forgiveness with a clenched fist and angry motivations. It is hard to prioritize love, kindness, when power and sovereignty are consuming one’s thoughts and actions. These are the dynamics we see on full display with Pharaoh throughout the plagues.
